April Fool Roundup

Stunt Racer 2003 screenshotIn our continuing effort to post real news about the platform, here's a roundup of the hilarious jolly japes people got up to on April 1st. Firstly, kudos to Drobe for having quite a few people fooled (including a widely respected Acorn Arcade editor. OK, me) with their extremely well done SR2K3 article, with accompanying website. You'd think people would realise what was up when they read stuff such as "Tempest's spokesperson declined with no further comment when we asked if Stunt Racer 2003 contained GPLed OpenGL source", but if you didn't, all was revealed when you ran the demo. Damn good.

As for the 1.0 empire, RISC OS is we! even managed to get updated. And I hope you all enjoyed the green Iconbar yesterday :)

Meanwhile, Martin Dann announced the latest of his software - ScanUsingPrinter. "!ScanUsingPrinter allows you to scan in a document using your printer", says Martin. "Due to the way this works, ScanUsingPrinter uses some of the quantum mechanical properties of light, this software will unfortunately only work on laser printers." This follows on from his other software, ProcessorSpeedUp, and ExtraHardDisc (which has sadly been removed, so keep hold of your copy if you downloaded it). Unfortunately, Nick Boalch (Backup Moderator of comp.sys.acorn.announce) had a few things to say about it.

And despite first appearances, if you rang up STD before 12 noon and said "looflirpa", you did indeed get £5 off their MP3 player. Which is real. Which took Drobe and TIB most of the day to figure out. Ah well.

In real news, Drobe has informed everyone of new releases of Digital CD and KinoAMP. There has also been a new developer release for ROX-Filer, and an announcement that 95% of programs on wimpbasic.org now work with Aemulor. ConfiX, the universal configuration utility, has also had a major update. Finally, and it's not an April Fool, promise, Acorn User are recruiting!

Oh and thanks for the Drobe summary. So convenient only having to visit one site for news!
