R-Comp prepare for Wakefield [updated]

rcompR-Comp are preparing for Wakefield with a "major shake-up of their range of RISCube computer systems". The RISCube series are a range of VirtualRiscPC machines running RISC OS and Windows.

The latest desktop system branded the RISCube Ultra and priced at 999UKP (inc VAT and delivery) uses a processor usually found in laptops running at 1.7Ghz, but Andrew Rawnsley from R-Comp informed us that "the performance is faster than any desktop out there. The RISCube Ultra as shipped performs about 10-20% faster in RISC OS than the [Athlon] FX-55".

The full system specifications are as follows:

  • 1.7Ghz centrino-technology processor
  • 1Gb of high speed DDR memory
  • 160Gb hard drive - high speed with 8Mb cache
  • Fanless graphics for very quiet operation
  • Floppy drive and 7-in-1 camera media drive
  • DVD drive with CDRW
  • Parallel printer port
  • 4x USB2 ports
  • 5.1 surround sound
  • 10/100/1000 networking

  • RISC OS 4.02 with RCI's performance enhancement technology
(Adjust available for those that require it)
  • Windows XP Home
Andrew also informed us that "in the original newsgroup posting, the Ultra64 was misprinted at 1299ukp. It should be 1199ukp" and that they are " also offering it with PCI-express for faster graphics bandwidth at no extra cost."

Also at the show, R-Comp will be selling a number of their RISCBooks, and although it looks like they are focusing on machines we have been told that new software announcements will be coming later this week.

Update: It as been pointed out to us that we failed to mention a few things from the PR. That'll teach me to skim read.
R-Comp have for some time now been shipping RISCubes with "performance enhancement technology" which allows "RISC OS to better interface with the graphics hardware in most RISCube machines, to give a very tangible speed improvement." The technology allows the use of high resolution screen modes (eg. 1600x1200) with minimal performance hit.

R-Comp will also be launching a new range of Media Centre computers at the show.
