Review - Target

A BBC conversion by Jochen Lueg, reviewed by Jon Hall.

 Jon...

[Screenshot!]With the exception of 'Kingdom' (new version availiable from Andrew Conroy), there are very few retro beeb style games that I would give the time of day to. Target is a new version of an old beeb game that now works on all Acorn platforms. It was origionally written more than 16 years ago, and has now been upgraded to include sound samples and better graphics, But it still maintains the old beeb look.

This is a 'Nuclear Holocaust' type of game, with the exception that it's single player only. You are in charge of a large, cliff mounted gun and are required to fire at a variety of ships, of different sizes. There is the added complication of a balloon that gets in the way.

ScreenshotBefore each shot you need to enter, via the keyboard, the angle of shot and the size of the charge. Too much charge can result in you blowing yourself up! The aim is to sink as many ships as possible and gain a high score before you run out of ammo. If you hit the balloon you get minus points.

I found the game quite fun to play for short periods, but it did not hold my attention for longer than a quarter of an hour. Worth taking a look at though.

So overall, not bad for those times when you have a short period of inaction and want a quick diversion.

To sum up

The good...
  • Fun for a short while
...the bad
  • Repetetive
  • Better variations available
