Do you think this is in response to the news of RISC OS 5 on the Iyonix?

Perhaps, but working with castle to produce RISC OS 4/5 Select would probably help them more. Apart from all the gnarly licenseing issues though :(

Are they putting RO4 or Select into these ROMs?

Well, I know, but I was trying to start a discussion. The point is that vanilla RO4 is what, three years old now, and RISC OS Ltd are burning it into more chips when there is a newer version of the OS available? I thought the Select scheme was partly a cunning way of getting rid of the RO4 chip stocks - surely they should ship Select (1) now? Or provide the option to get it in ROM?

Unregistered user I agree, to ship an old version of an OS as a way to sell Select is pretty lame, however if you compare the price of RISC OS 4 to a brand new copy of Mac OS X or WinXP, RO4 is actually a pretty good deal anyway. Also, ROL have to make a buck somewhere, and with RO5 on the way, revenues are going to be slim for anyone trying to shift RO4, and I doubt Select on RO5 will do well (if it appears), after shelling out what will likely be £1000+ on an Iyonix, more on a monitor to do the graphics justice, not many people will be gasping to spend another £100 getting what amounts to a 'Plus Pack'.

If they already own a select subscription from a RiscPC or whatever, surely they could just swap it over to an Iyonix?

Unregistered user Bargain for a largely 2 year old OS. Just try and hold me back from buying it, so I can be roped into a subscription scheme for future minor upgrades!

I'd be more interested to know if anyone has Linux running on Iyonix. Actually, that could have been the first operating system they had running.

RISC OS 5 could have been great in 1995, but it's not entirely compelling now, is it?

Unregistered user Not a lot of point trying to get Linux going on it - Linux already runs just fine on most XScale and ARM dev boards. Not to mention getting much more boom for your buck by running Linux on pretty much any other CPU you could shake a stick at.

Why on earth would you want to buy an Iyonix to run Linux on it??? Seems like spending a lot of money just to run an OS available on other much cheaper and more powerful hardware?!?!

Iyonix should be good for running RISC OS but Linux - get a i386 compatible for probably half the price.

To stay on topic for just a while: If RO Ltd. is still going to be putting RO 4.0x on the ROMS maybe people should wait to see if Castle will be offering RO 5 as an upgrade.

Well, there's clearly little point in buying an Iyonix given the price/performance of available x86-compatible hardware, but surely there would be some "hack value" involved in running Linux on it, and the availability of Linux would at least give RISC OS users a possible upgrade path to a real operating system. ;-)
