Is there anyway of disassembling the unit and then putting the actual HD in another unit to work?

Don't want to send it off as their is confidential information on it.

I had a similar sounding problem with a drive, and it turned out to be the controller card (the PCB on the bottom of the drive). It's difficult (read: virtually impossible) to attach a new motor, but swapping the controller card *might* just coax it into working.

What I've heard, working for a computer retailer in Iceland, if you're certain that the inside disks themselves need to be moved to another HD unit it will cost you a lot of money and you most definately will need to send it off.

I've heard that it will cost a minimum of UKP1000 just to have people with the appropriate equipment accept to even try. That then depends on if they are able to get another drive that's exactly like yours. The price may go up from then on!

Note that this only applies if you have to move the disks themselves from one unit to another.
The disks and read/write heads are VERY sensitive to even the smallest piece of dust and a disk is almost certainly destroyed if opened without the proper equipment and sterilization. I'd consult some company that you know has very good knowledge of harddisks and problems such as yours before even thinking of attempting anything yourself.
