I used to play the Trombone. Although it's got a slidey wub, there are only 7 discreet positions to get on-key notes. And number 7 is sort of a variation on position 1, IIRC. I could never reach it, anyway.
You can get different notes by varying your mouth's vibrations, as said above.
The instrument vibrates at a certain frequency dependent on the length of air in it. In the trombone this is easy to see.. In the trumpet the valves introduce extra lengths of tubing (or possibly remove them, I'm not sure)
So. Bearing in mind that I'm not that musical and I've not played for a long time (E&OE):
According to the western scheme for mathematically describing pitch:
An octave covers one doubling of frequency (cycles per second). Middle C is 256Hz, C in the octave above is 512Hz.
8 'tones' cover one octave.
ABCDEFGA
and each note can be varied by a semitone; half a tone in either direction to be 'sharp' or 'flat'.
There are theoretical differences between Asharp and Bflat, but I don't think these are recognised in practice.
Which suggests the need for 16 different positions for each octave covered.
So.
To get one octave difference, one should get the air to vibrate twice as fast, which can be done at the same (valve) position on the instrument.
(I might be wrong here - it kind of depends on how the air vibrates inside; I've mostly forgotten the physics involved but it depends on the ends and requires a standing wave to result.)
And you can get different harmonics (which are not multiples of 2) but fractions, where the air is vibrating in a different way.
Therefore, and IIRC, you don't use all the positions uniformly for each octave and you get several different notes at the same position within the octave.
Maybe if I'd been taught the mathmatics, rather than note positions by rote I might have learned it easier and better.

Guitar players also seem to have a ludicrous advantage in this area.
