Has anybody seen these are available for DOS for 5UKP. The source is possibly included but could anybody convert it to ARM/C for a RISC OS version? This would be permitted I understand under the rules of the Elite Club (www.eliteclub.co.uk) |

Weren't all PC versions of Elite meant to be rather bad? Converting them would only be worth it if they were better than ArcElite. |

I don't know about that. There's quite a difference between all of them. Although I understand Elite 2 is graphically disappointing it seems to have far more depth and Elite 3 seems really quite good. |

> Weren't all PC versions of Elite meant to be rather bad? Converting them would only be worth it if they were better than ArcElite. Does it have to be a straight conversion? Some things could surely be changed, like the Elite-A variant and of course ArcElite itself... I would welcome a hybrid Elite with both better graphics and gameplay... |

Well, there's already been a Hybrid Elite (the company who released so-called 'ArcElite'). Personally though, I'd prefer to see the much greater enhancements which were present in the sequels. |

It's all rather academic as the source isn't included as yet. Just read the news on the Elite Club site... it has been close to release for ages. However in the mean time there is the source to Elite - The New Kind, Christian Pinder's project to reverse engineer the original. URL : http://home.clara.net/cjpinder/elite.html The code is in C and uses the Allegro library (no port is available of this for RISC OS), but the functions used aren't that difficult to implement. I'm not saying that I'm porting it though. |

> Well, there's already been a Hybrid Elite (the company who released so-called 'ArcElite'). I didn't mean hybrid as in the company Hybrid, I know about them because I am a huge fan of ArcElite. I meant hybrid as: Main Entry: hy·brid Alternatively, to make it a little clearer: Entry Word: hybrid |

Does it have to be a straight conversion? Some things could surely be changed, like the Elite-A variant and of co Well, my brother used to have frontier on his Atari ST, the features that Frontier added were mostly the new features in Elite-A, plus many more ship designs, more complex ship models, and the ability to land on planets. The game features an entire modelled galaxy (a real-sized one) with accurate nearby stars, and occupied one 720k disc. I believe that Mr. Braben knew one of the authors of Karma, and certain ideas may have been swapped between them. The PC version included texture mapping on the graphics. Unfortuately, the game included real space dynamics (like AFAIK, Black Angel) - with benific of any type of fly-by-wire computer assist - making dogfights very difficult. The follow up, 'Elite 3' was, AFAIK, more game/less simulation, but suffered from bugs. I have the original release 1.1 of the flight trainer, and it is still a great program... but I was looking forward to progress, and it seems to have died a little. I checked their website but it hasn't been updated for ages. Anyone know? |

Ah, a biologist as well! So we have two things in common! Actually, we don't... I'm a journalist. I just need to know a lot to be any use as a journalist, despite what people may say. *sniffs disdainfully and waits for the disparaging comments* |

I started converting that once. Knocked up a complete and utter mess to do the Allegro bits, but it worked after a very slow and useless fashion. More of an academic exercise, really, although some day I might go back and polish it off. Learning how to program properly would probably help |

The code looks fairly easy to get running although as you say a vanilla version would be slow. There is an abundance of floating point math through the code... but getting the vanilla version up and running would be a start. Come on someone must be interested in getting a port out. I can't deal with all the entertainment related conversions... |

Basically IIRC one of the programmers died in a road accident; the remaining half of the programming team tried to continue but there doesn't seem to be any updates on the website since mid 1997 http://www.argonet.co.uk/users/inspire/karma/karma.html |

Um, unfortunate choice of words Aaaahhh... oops. Oh well. It's a pity, because it looked like a fascinating proposition... I wonder if anything will ever be done with it as it stands... probably not... thanks anyway for letting me know. ~ Jason |

Yes it would be nice to see a new space-sim. A new, modern-day flight-sim. would also be good. Andrew |
