I was wondering how long it would be before someone noticed this.Anyone up for a RISC OS port ? That really is a joke, hence the smiley, right? |

David - I thought so but I'm half paranoid of someone coming along and proclaiming that they're doing it and it's possible (right). Jeff - perhaps you'd stand half a chance with the new cards recently announced (see www.iconbar.com) but I suspect with the standard model be bottlenecked when shifting textures across the bus. |

Yeah Lee people always come along claiming they are doing x, y & z... and it never happens. So far nothing about Q2 though. Although it is being ported to the PocketPC platform by Dan East : bttp://quake.pocketmatrix.com Supposedly it runs at around 4.9fps at the start on his iPaq, which has a 200Mhz SA... although it has a faster bus. It's a hell of a lot easier porting to PocketPC than RISC OS though... |

Yes, you're scaling down I hear! Indeed! I should be down to only a couple of RISC OS projects in the near future... |

Only 2 sounds good to me :-) Yeah... but 2 instead of 20 odd is quite a significant scale down! |

I think I'd prefer a port of the Unreal Tournament engine. I played some of Quake II again today and I was bored out of my mind after 5 minutes, it is so dull compared to the standard of the fps genre today. If the ut engine was ported then the RiscOS platform would have a great multiplayer game in the form of ut, and brilliant single player in the form of DeusEx. |

There are several problems with this : a) The Unreal Tournament source isn't available ...David |

And the ut engine didn't need 3d hardware, it had the option to use software rendering. |

And the ut engine didn't need 3d hardware, it had the option to use software rendering. Yes, but I'll bet the minimum processor spec for this was higher than if you had hardware acceleration available. Face it, it isn't practical on current RISC OS hardware. Besides all this discussion about engines is irrelevant when talking about whether a game is good or not. The Quake 2 engine is a very capable engine, but it's not the fault of the engine if ID have just rehashed the same game over and over again. That doesn't mean that you can't write a good game with the engine though. |
