...a magical PDA that has a keyboard, rechargeable battery, and wifi internets. And doesn't run Windows CE, and doesn't cost as much as a small house. Unfortunately, such a thing doesn't seem to exist. |

Blackberry?http://www.discoverblackberry.com/devices/device-detail.jsp?navId=H0,C62,P71 You call that a keyboard? Fuck off. Sony Mylo?Looks a tad small. Opera DS?ENOKEYBOARD Alternatively, one of these which can be powered from the ethernet cable would be perfect. Then I can put some modem emulator software on it, plug it into the router (which is right next to my bed, the intended place of my lazing-around), and use it to provide internet access for my current PDA. In fact such a thing does seem to exist ready-made, but is a tad expensive at £169. Plus my router doesn't support power of ethernet anyway. http://www.amplicon.co.uk/dr-prod3.cfm/subsecid/10011/secid/4/groupId/12594.htm |

Of course if I had PoE I'd probably just buy an A9Home and use that to provide access (as well as file storage, calculating PI to 10,000 places in Befunge, and whatever other pointless use I can think of). Alternatively I could buy a 5m serial extension cable. Or just get off my backside and walk the 5m to the computers. Now do you understand my problem? |

Let us know if it's any good. Specifically with respect to the keyboard. I've been saying for years that if my Psion had a colour screen and wifi I could die happy, and I've been wistfully checking http://www.handtops.com/ periodically, hoping that one of the things on there would ever get released/not be rubbish. Not that I could even afford one of those, anyway. This Zaurus thingy looks pretty promising, however. Keep us posted! |

Yes, I am a bit worried about the small size of the keyboard. With a Psion you can quite easily thumb-type, but the keys on the Zaurus are smaller and might cause difficulty. |

With Psion I can basically touch type, although I'm a bit less accurate that on a real keyboard. Unless I can get a reasonable speed up on that thing, it is only likely to get use as a toy. A fun toy, but not necessarily something I should be spending 300-400 quid on. I'll probably still get one even if the keyboard sucks, though. It looks awesome! |

It has an infrared port, so if the keyboard gives you trouble all you need to do is write a program to keyboard share between your psion and the Zaurus |

How about the Sony Ericsson P990i mobile phone? It has a small keyboard (which surprisingly is not as difficult to type on as it might first appear), has PDA facilities, wifi and doesn't run Windows. Not exactly cheap at the moment (unless you get a silly tariff) but no doubt the price will drop soon. Seems to have everything you'd want and is small enough to fit in a pocket. |

You seem to have missed the bit where I rejected a device with a small keyboard. And then the other bit where I ordered a Zaurus. But apart from that, the very fact it's a mobile phone probably means I'll have to pay some crappy monthly fee just to use the thing as a PDA. Which is all I'm interested in. (OK, being able to browse the net while on the move might be useful, but that's not a priority since I generally don't move anywhere ) |

I like the cut of their jib. One of their staff members visited my website But he also said they were out of AC adaptors + wifi cards, so instead of arriving tomorrow it'll be arriving Friday Plus Amazon have sent me a slightly too large parcel, and the post office decided to take it back to an office that's over a mile away instead of to the depot that's literally right across the street |

The power light has turned off. So either the battery is fully charged, or the adaptor is really shit and has burnt itself out. Let's take a look! |

A bit trickier to type with than a psion, but if you lookat the keys and are careful not to press too hard (which would cause you to press adjacent keys) then you can get a respectable typing speed. The fact that the wlan card sticks out the side even helps a bit The default browser is nice and nippy too, even if it does screw up some page layouts if you use the wrong setting. |
