I'm thinking of buying a big external hard drive - around 300 gig. Preferably with Firewire, as my Mini has few USB ports, but a spare Firewire one sitting there unloved and unplugged. Any suggestions what/where to buy/avoid? |

I got a Freecom 40GB USB powered, and data transfer from Amazon for about £52.00 It failed within the week, and I sent it back for a replacement (at Amazon's cost). Replacement has been fine. It has a 40GB disc in, but this can be switched for any compatible 2.5" disc. |

Are some particularly noisy, with fans and suchlike? What about network attached storage? Is this any good for playing movies and music from directly? Anyone use one with RISC OS - or would mounting it on the Mac and sharing it be more practical? |

Right, this is now becoming an emergency, as I have less than 800Mb free. I guess I could delete some stuff, but wah. So. Maxtor or Seagate? The Maxtor has a 16MB buffer compared to 8MB, but is it worth the extra twenty quid? http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.aspx?Quicklinx=3XSZ&CategorySelectedId=11154&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11154,4294960320,40620000,40970000&InMerch=1 http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=3RFS&CategorySelectedId=11154&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11154,4294960320,40620000,40970000&v=3#infoarea |

Can't you open your Mac mini, and put a larger drive in?Probably - as long as he can find a way not to pierce the precious selotape! http://www.sterpin.net/uk/ddMacMiniuk.htm Alternatively, this looks like the right kind of external hard drive, if a little mac-specific. |

They sell ones for Mac Minis (same case style, etc) in the Apple store (Trafford Centre). I had a quick look at them when I was there buying my Mac Mini, but I can't remember the price of them... ISTR it was this one: http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/6194040/wo/4V15QvwGiKtt2hRt4tSO39w2ovj/2.PSLID?mco=CC8438E7&nplm=TE798 |

Can't you open your Mac mini, and put a larger drive in?It would make transferring the data a bit awkward though. |

Hmm... are these things designed to be used all day? What if they don't have fans? |

Hmm... are these things designed to be used all day? What if they don't have fans?My laptop doesn't have a HD fan, so I assume it doesn't need one. It doesn't get excessivly hot. My USB disc also doesn't have a fan, but the metal case possibly acts as a heat sync, and it doesn't get too hot. |

Right, this is now becoming an emergency, as I have less than 800Mb free. I guess I could delete some stuff, but wah.Neither. Get a Lacie. they're gorgeous, flawless and fast. Oh, and they have one that looks like a LEGO brick (o: http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10693 try ebuyer for a UK seller. If you want cheap and cheerful, buy an external enclosure from a box shifter and stick your own maxtor drive in it. Around these parts I can get a USB2/Firewire box for under 20 quid. Around these parts I can get a USB2/Firewire box for under 20 quid. That's what I do - then it's cheap and easy to change/upgrade the drive, and as a bonus you can just unscrew it whenever you get another hard drive handed to you (good for recovering data from an unbootable computer) - you simply use your case as a portable IDE -> USB interface when not in use as a portable HDD. I also do this with laptop drives - powered from the USB bus, it's nice to carry around a less-than-wallet-sized 40GB self-powered USB drive |

A few years back I bought a 2.5" USB caddy for about £2 off ebay and popped in a cheap laptop HDD and it still works without issue, is nice and quiet, fast enough for me on USB2 and being a laptop drive caddy it draws it's power over USB.... I am sure you could pick up a similar firewire caddy on ebay and shove in your HDD of choice... Cheers John |

.Got one, for roughly the same amount of squids from Amazon a short while ago. The biggest problem with it is the noticeable delay when you first try to access it after it's powered itself down. It's literally only a matter of a second or so, but it's noticeable. The flip side to that, of course, is that it means you're saving a penny or so per year in electricity because this extremely high power device is powering down when not being used. |
