After owning the game for what must be almost 16 years I *almost* beat the Micro Machines 2 challenge mode today, for what I believe would have been my first time (otherwise it wouldn't have been worth digging up this thread for).

Unfortunately the version of DOSBox I'm using doesn't seem to run the game at full speed (and has stuttery horizontal scrolling), so even if I'd beaten it it wouldn't have counted as a real win. I'm sure that at some point I had a version of DOSBox that would play the game at full speed and with smooth scrolling. If only I could remember if/how to get it to run properly unhappy

But the SNES version won't have awesome CD music. PC version FTW!

No it wouldn't, but it would have MIDI. The only console that might have that with orignal style/non-3D game is the CD32. The later Micro Machines games on PS2 and Xbox had fallen foul to the obsession with using 3D with everything, which as always didn't benefit gameplay in anyway :/

Obvious advantage of a console version is that;

a) it plugs into your TV and works in minutes
b) proper game pads, again no need to meddle with settings and config dancing
c) it doesn't use a bloody awful emulator like DOSbox
d) console versions are nearly always enhanced by request of the licencing company. I find nearly all the SNES versions of things have nice tweaking, take SimCity SNES version for instance.

And with a multi-tap (which I've got the Bomberman one) you can have drunken bouts with a group of mates. Micro Machines being one of the multi-player games for such nights :)

Tbh, if anyone was thinking of getting a cheap console nowerdays, I hate to say it but I'd tell them to go get an old Xbox, it's got ZSNES (which is near as damn it IMHO) and a hoard of other emulators, with four pad ports on the console like the Dreamcast (which is also awesome) means no need for a multi-tap.

OR of course if they've already got one, the Wii has all the old Sega and Nintendo consoles emulated in virtual console wiiware. But my Xbox seems to get the most play time at the moment :/
