Unregistered user | If ROS Ltd disappeared tomorrow and Pace took over the desktop OS wholesale, but said that 32 bit would appear in 2 years time and be sold at around 180 quid, would there be fewer, more or the same number of people who have complained about the lack of movement? |

Unregistered user | Rather depends on how they told us about it. If they said it was too expensive and dead in the water unless sufficient 'future interest' might be forthcoming, I don't think we would be happy. If they clammed up and said nothing for two years, I don't think we would be happy. If they gave us a roadmap and kept us positively and honestly in touch with the milestones, and maybe involved us with feedback, beta testing, etc, I think ... oh look is that a pig flying past my window? Hypothetical, I think you said :/ |

Pace won't take over the desktop OS wholesale so there's little point in speculating..however... If they said 32bit would take two years with nothing in between then I'm not sure what I'd do - my reaction would be "why so long?" when we know they're sitting on a 32bit compliant subset already. I suspect they'd be less people to complain - they'd all be gone. Certainly I would have to reconsider my position once I'd finished my writeup. There's little point expending time writing for a platform that's going nowhere. In two years time I'd expect linux to be easy to use as well. By this argument I guess I should be jumping ship now - it's only my commitments to Nathan and the rest of VOTI that have really kept me here so far. |

I suppose it depends on whether "Pace" were offering vapourware 32bit ROS. I think that certainly the promise of a 32bit OS would be very good, but the price and waiting time would put most people off. In 2 years time 64bit CPUs will be the norm. for PCs so i can imagine the requests then.. But most people would be happy to see that someone was actually putting down their mug of coffee to do some work, even if it would take "2 years" to finish. |
