Unregistered user | You rendered stuff in TopModel????? Why? I can create stuff in 3DMax and Bryce4, its just I have a great model in TopModel which I want to import. plus TopModel has an easy creater. I tried importing to Bryce 4 the other day using the same method - it completely flattened the model on the y-axis so it looks like it just fell off a 250 story building..... Clearly there is something wrong with my exporter. Has anybody got a workng version? Its only fair since I've paid for it, you'd expect it to work really. :-D Cheers. |

Unregistered user | It does sound like your exporter is failing. We import 3DStudioMax models sometimes for EMD into TopModel and they work. Exporting as VRML loads into DaVinci well and VRMLEyes okay so I presume would work on a PC. |

Unregistered user | Yep. The exporter basically doesn't work. Thats what you pay for, something that doesn't work. :-) |

Unregistered user | Maybe it's time to release my Windows TopModel conversion utility ;-) |

Unregistered user | Cerilica agree that this is an area that needs improvement. Mark sends me VRML models and I've imported models from a recent 3dworld magazine CD. I found that Lightwave files imported but not the '3ds' ones. However, there is a utility for converting 3ds into VRML on a PC which you can ten lad back into TopModel. Unfortunately of course, this requires a PC and is inconvenient. Personally, I'm looking foward to better animation facilities in the forthcoming upgrade. |

Unregistered user | Ok, I'd better establish who it might be useful to first, since I wrote it to get my TopModel files across into Bryce for rendering / texturing. Never-the-less it's better than the TopModel conversion utilities (IMHO of course !). What it does is convert TopModel ASCII files into Wavefront OBJ files. It has a go at producing mtl files to accompany the OBJ files, but the support for materials is pretty poor - since TMs materials can't be translated to MTL files (bits missing on either side). Other things it does is produce sensible groups, from materials, groups, colours and textures. Although TM ASCII files don't export group names, so you end oup with gorup1, group2, etc. The other interesting thing it does is attempt to support texture co-ordinates (;-))- however, since TM files express texture co-ordinates in terms of pixels in the source file, you have to enter the resolution of each of the referenced file to get a proper conversion. This hasn't been well tested - although I believe the conversion works. Finally, I'm not sure how widely I want the utility to be distributed or what status it should be. Perhaps the best thing to say (for now) is that I'm looking for five or so beta testers. So, if you're interested in beta testing it then get in touch. Remember, it's a Windows only utility. So far I've tested it on 98 and ME. Apart from the occasional glitch, it seems to work ok. Regards, Max |

I'd be happy to test it, as it would certainly make life easier when exporting 3D models, & then sending them to Andrew, as it should hopefully cut-down the unexpected results. Does it also convert Topmodel to PC formats?? |

Mark - the utility converts TopModel ASCII files TO Wavefront OBJ files, so wouldn't be of use in your case I'm afraid. It's a tool for exporting files from TopModel to other packages. Perhaps at some stage I should look at making it import stuff too ... Regards, Max |

Unregistered user | Improved import would be a bonus, particuarly as it is not apparently being included with the next TopModel upgrade. Andrew |

Unregistered user | I'll put import on my list, but I wouldn't hold your breath, since I don't import much into TM. Anyway, I've had one response so far. Anyone else want to beta test the software ? The Windows utility converts (one way) Regards, Max |

Unregistered user | I am working on a project which requires 3D renderings/animations and seeing as the renderer on TopModel is of no use (although the creater is just the job) I want to export models from TopModel2 and import them into 3DStudioMax where I can apply textures/maps and other plugins, then render them. To achieve this I take the following steps: When exporting I tried to save a file as a DXF and it works, but when I try to load it in 3DMAX it comes up with: "An error has occurred and the application will now close". Can anybody help? I have spoken to Cerilica, but they basically implied that I would have to wait 12 - 18 months for any upgrades in the Top Model package,..... which is nice. :-( I believe Max Palmer at Artex is creating the 3D models for TEK in TopModeol then exporting successfully,... so if your listening Artex! |

For Overcast 2, we do this the other way round, in that I use Truespace 3 to build the model (although for some models I create them on Worldcraft, then export them as a .DXF to truespace), I then save then models as VRML 1 files, then Andrew textures them on TopModel and puts them into the game, although recently I have done some renderings, patched them, and then send them off as bitmaps. Unfortunately I dont have TopModel so i cannot help you with ur problem though |
