Unregistered user I think your best bet would be to buy an ADSL router, a bit more difficult to set up but then the router will make sure you're online and connect you when needed wether you try to go online from your PC or your RiscPC. I don't know how much such a router would cost in the UK but I doubt it's anywhere near the 350 pounds it costs in Iceland so it's not a big investment.

Setting up the router does require you to have some knowledge of TCP/IP networking but so does setting up a proxy server so I think you wouldn't have too much trouble. The plus of having a router is that you also get a firewall, given you buy a decent router. I am assuming that you have network cards in both computers for the connection.

Then again, someone might have written some software for RISC OS to keep the connection up.

so how would the router work??
The other option i was considering would be to bring in a cheap pc as the server, and has this "aways-on" and acting as the internet server to the two other pcs.
would this work????

right, well ive subscribed to the adsl information, gone through most of the messages, and I have also looked at a number of Proxy Servers, so I now think its pretty possible to network the USB version of BT Openworld. (As long as i dont get the NAT version).
So what do I have to do on the Risc PC side of things???

hi, does anyone know whether it is possible to get ADSL on Risc PC?????
Our family is considering the upgrade to ADSL with BTOpenworld.
In our household we have (as a family pc) a StrongARM 233 Risc PC (and my) 700Mhz Athlon pc.
As the RiscPC does not have a USB port, we are going to have to use the PC as the connected computer, but does anyone know whether it is possible to enable access to the Risc PC so that we can still use that for the internet too??
I though it might be possible by networking the two computers, and setting up a proxy sever on the pc, and setting up the Risc PC as a client.
Would this work????
please help!
Thanks

Mark smile

Unregistered user I don't think a router would work, unless it has a USB connection.

The only simple way I know of would be to go for the hideously expensive option of getting the ethernet version of ADSL, not the single-user ADSL. I think with the USB option you're only supposed to have one computer on, you're not allowed to run your network off it unhappy

unhappy the hideously expensive option of the multi-user ADSL is ...slightly out of our price range unhappy

If you were to set up a pc as a proxy server, which is always hooked up to the internet, then woudl it be possible for it to work then?? (bit like what u've got to do to share a dial-up connection).
I've been told that should work, but can anyone confirm it, as i would then be able to get hold of an old PC, and set that up as an always-on server, which would also benefit the other computers on the network (RiscPC & PC)
Using The Samba Software for Risc OS, can I share Risc PC drives and devices over the network to PCs???
& finally, what operating System is required to set up a Proxy-Server?? could i get away with Win98???

Unregistered user You can only use routers and modems as supplied and fitted by British Telecom.

As for connecting with the RiscPC, I believe setting up a network with the RiscPC and Athlon machine would work.

Subscribe to adsl-subscribe@bigpipes.org.uk and you can ask people who are using the service and have been since the trials began. The Web site is at www.bigpipes.org.uk.

You should be able to find out if networking can be done with the USB version and then come back here and find out how to setup your RiscPC smile
