Unregistered user Here's a question currently going over and over my particular brain, so any answers would be appreciated...

What are you supposed to do when your RiscPC, on which you do a lot of important business-related e-mails and DTP, suddenly refuses to start up properly? And I need it to start up properly *urgently*, ie. two days maximum, preferably a lot quicker. I'm in York, and without having checked for sure I doubt that there's a 24-hour RiscPC fixing service in this area...

*Please* e-mail suggestions to stuart@atomiser.demon.co.uk if at all possible.

The symptoms are that the CD-ROM drive and hard drive power up fine, but the screen and the floppy disc drive remain dead when I switch on; absolutely nothing appears on screen, not even the usual blue and pink screens. Anyone else had this problem?

Cheers

Stuart.

Unregistered user Is the computer itself starting properly?
Do you have lights on the keyboard and do they turn on and off as you press the corresponding keys?
Have you tried using a different cable for the monitor, not connecting through the computer but directly to the mains? It may be that the power supply is acting funny.

Unregistered user Thanks for the comments, but unfortunately I've already ruled out the possibility of there being anything wrong with the monitor- it is split between two machines, and is working fine with the other.

When I boot up, the keyboard LEDs flash briefly, but after that there is no response from the keyboard. It seems to be something early in the start-up sequence, because the pink and blue test screens (for processor and memory?) don't even appear.

hmmmmm
its gonna be quicker i think if u send you RPC back to be fixed now, rather than hope u can find a solution.
It sounds like something in the hardware has gone wrong, have u made any alterations to the machine recently??

Unregistered user Presumably you have done the usual resets. Can't remeber the keys cos I'm work right now but the welcome manual describes them. These resets and various boot options will allow you to 1. boot without running !Boot. 2. Reset the cmos settings to factory defaults etc etc.

Unregistered user From the symptoms it sounds a bit like the keyboard fuse has blown, which happened on mine and IIRC stopped the machine starting up properly. It can be de-soldered and another put in, but as it's surface mounted it's a little tricky.

It could also be a problem with the power supply, in that it allows the power to the monitor through (if that's how you're powering it) but the internal power might have a blown capacitor. But it usually doesn't power up at all if thisis the case.

Best to get someone who knows what they're talking about to verify these though.

Unregistered user I had a similar problem once when I was swapping my monitor between the RiscPC and a PC.

Fortunately it happened 1 day before the warranty ran out! The engineer replaced everything on the motherboard, and then the motherboard itself but it didn't fix it.

It turned out to be the data cable from the monitor had a bent pin - it obviously didn't matter to the PC, but the RiscPC couldn't cope with it!

Unregistered user My monitor (Compaq) goes into energy saving mode if sync is left on auto, (like after delete power on) it needs separate syncs, not composite. (Caused me lots of "fun" when upgrading to riscos 4).
