It's the RISCOS Ltd annual report. Find out how much money they're losing, how many upgrades they've sold, what they're planning for the future.

It's very interesting reading.

Unregistered user 2,939 copies sold isn't exactly much but the positive thing about this is it can give you a rough indication of the size of the market. Probably at least the same number is running RISC OS 3.5 - 3.7 giving us approximately 6,000 users of versions 3.5 and onwards. How old are these sales figures anyway? Since January?

This is the first indication I've ever seen about the size of the market. For a few years I've been advocating the need for possible new developers to know roughly what they can expect in terms of sales so their planning can be realistic. Knowing that they can expect to sell maybe 100-200 copies and then selling 300 is more likely to make them develop more applications than expecting to sell 3-4,000 copies and then selling the same 300. Congratulations on this excellent step forward RISCOS Ltd.

BTW, the page numbering and indexing of the report leaves a lot to be desired.

Unregistered user Shouldn't there be a news item about the annual report on the front page? I know Cybervillage has already covered it but my guess is that www.iconbar.com is becoming the first point of reference for many people in RISC OS, specially those outside the UK but not everyone likes reading forums (strange - I know).

Unregistered user Sorry, been a bit busy. I've done a short news item, but I haven't had a chance to read the report in great details yet so I may edit it later.

If anyone fancies helping out with TIB's news we're looking for a couple of extra news updaters to take some of the load off. Email me if you're interested.

Unregistered user Apart from the loss and the odd negative point I think the RISC OS scene can be pleased with itself on this one - the report does seems to be quite a decent one.

Unregistered user I think the report itself is good, but RISCOS Ltd. have been quiet for too long IMO. It's nice to see their plans for the future on paper, we'll just have to hope that they'll somehow get the funding to pull them off.

Unregistered user Delving deeper into the figures prove interesting.

Of the 2,939 copies sold 2350 were upgrades and 589 were to licensed hardware manufacturers (representing new computers sales). The figures seem only to relate up to January 2000.

I suspect Kinetic will have gained created some new business (probably not reflected in the report) and when newer hardware comes out (Millipede's Imago, RiscStations Evolution and possibly the portables) you'll see even more sales. I think you will see a considerable "upturn" once more meaty hardware becomes available, let's face it Acorn computers last and last and people usually buy a new model rather than just upgrading the OS. I for one (and I suspect others) have not upgraded because they're waiting on new hardware with various enhancements. This is a situation that is not fully under ROL's control but I suspect they will have a financially easier year next year - assuming that the new hardware does appear on schedule.

Unregistered user I do hope that Risc OS 4.5 will be sold as a trade-in from 4.02 I have seen a number of second hand risc OS 4.02 Rom sets around along with standard SA cards, from people upgrading to kenetic I guess. It will get Risc OS ltd more income and reward those who helped to get it all started if there is a small discount for trading in your old roms.

Unregistered user Put simply grin : RiscStation's Portable will see the ligfht of day in less than a week. This will probably fasten sales of ROS4.

It's a new dimension of having ROS by your side, when you need it ;-)

I think we're all looking forward to this one!

tongue

Absolutely it will help RISCOS4 sales, hopefully in 2 ways:

1) directly through copies required for the laptops and

2) the very existence of a RISC OS laptop may help to increase the exposure that RISC OS gets, thus increasing sales of all RISC OS computers in the long term.

Well, I would like to think so wink

ROR!

Steve - are you OK ? shock

I'm sure there will be a sensible upgrade path for RISC OS 4.5 (and then RISC OS 5 according to that pdf! All very commendable, but who is going to create these software miracles?).

My thoughts are too pre-occupied with the thought of that shiny RISCOS portable to write anything more of sense (Steve - I trust you found it...) grin
