I am a PC user, pissed of with Windows and attempting to go back to using RiscOS.
But,
I have just bought the Oregano suite, and am frankly very disappointed.
The browser itself has many irritating bugs, and it displays my site (created with Textease) all over the place.
I accept this is an early release, but even so. £58 !
As for the rest of the supplied software, well, I am still stuck with Freeserve, having not been able to connect to Free-Online, to retrieve my account.
Lack of instructions?

I don't know.As for setting up an email account with Messenger, frankly, I haven't got a clue! I would say that I know a fair bit more about PC's than the 'average' user.
How then is the 'average' PC user to make the switch from Windows to RiscOS? I have heard of the Ant Internet suite, which uses the Fresco browser, but I as this would cost me a further £100+ I am reluctant to buy it without concrete evidence of it's quality.
£58? + £100? to get on the Internet?
I must point out that with windows I can do this for nothing.
Windows may not be stable, but after spending that much money, I would probably feel a bit dizzy myself. |

Oregano is an early release and there are many bugs that need fixing. I'd be interested in having a look at your site to try and work out what exactly it is that it's having trouble with. As far as connecting to Free-online goes, ask on the newsgroups and I'm sure you'll find a solution. Same with Messenger. I wouldn't buy ANT Suite - it won't really make things much easier and is far too expensive for what it is now. |

I'm an old RISC OS Italian user (since the Archimedes 305 with Arthur OS) well ARM did start like the best processor for personal computing of the world, after Acorn did make another wonderfull machine called Risc PC, now all about RISC OS did back to the past, after a very glorious past RISC OS be a game OS not a real OS, why in the 2K Year RISC OS HAVE NOT PROTECTED MEMORY? Why in the 2K year NOT HAVE A GOOD MULTITHREAD? Why in the 2K have not a good priemptive multitask? Why RISC PC don have new motherboards at 166 Mhz with PCI and AGP BUSS? Why RISC OS Ltd don't use WinRISC and upgrade it for have all windows aoftware under RISC OS? The answer is only one we are living in the PAST! and other all of this very old tecnologies we can see HP and Compaq that are makeing new machines and have (like you tell) very hight cost for very old softwares and hardware! i'm very disappointed with this concepts but i have no money for build a project about a new motherboard in standard PC99 for a new RiscPC I think that if RISC OS want live must make 2 important things rebuild WinRisc (for open RISC OS machines to windows software) and build a new motherboard and a version of RISC OS 4 with protected memory (for apps) but i don't think that they know how make this... i hope but i don't believe. :-( |

Oregano should have a new patch(es) soon... :) ANT can be more friendly than Messenger for e-mail but (I agree that) it is too expensive. Don't give up though :) |

A quick phone call to Castles Support line has clarified a number of points.
The only software that they are SELLING, is Oregano browser.The rest (Socketeer, Messenger and so on) is freeware and provided as is. No support is available for this. Fair enough. |

I take Paolo's point about both Not having protected memory, and not having proper multithreading. Yes they are both features that should be added. The other points about Acorns not having PCI, AGP bus or 166MHz clocked speeds. Most PCs dont have (officially) 166MHz busses. PCI only runs at 33 (or less frequently 66)MHz as for AGP initial versions of that ran graphics slower than conventional Video over PCI !!! AGP basically allows the processor to access the video ram (or the video controller to use the main RAM) in much the same way as you do on your Acorn ! Granted that's a bit of a simplification ! The Acorn style machines acchieve creditable performance due to their hardware, the frugal RiscOS and the efficiency of the ARM. Whether that would be still true if it was implemented along the lines of a PC style motherboard I would not be so sure ! |

The problem with with a faster bus is that the fastest external speed that a StrongArm can syncronise to is 66Mhz. You'll have to wait for 2nd generation StrongArm for that. |

From the Intel web page (after a lot of searching):

current StrongARM generation while keeping power consumption below
one-half watt," said Mark Casey, StrongARM marketing director. "At
speeds of 150 MHz to 600 MHz, next-generation StrongARM processors
should deliver performance that scales from 185 to 750 MIPS*** while
consuming only 40 to 450 milliwatts." You must remember however, that this new processor will probably not support 26-bit mode currently required by RISC OS. RISCOS Ltd expect that it would take approx. 18 months to make the necessary changes.
AFAIR the chips should appear the end of this year. Which would probably mean we wouldn't see them until beginning of 2002. |
