Unregistered user As a former Acorn Dealer, now reduced to building
Pesky PCees to order, I am looking forward to
upgrading my 5 year old RiscPC, with Kinetic.

It is a mark 1 motherboard (with the timeing
errors fixed!) and SA 233 running RiscOS 3.7.

I still run my dealership on it, using the
excellent !Prophet Accounts software - alone
well worth keeping RiscOS in the office.

I this upgrade is as fast as I suspect it is
going to be, my ageing RiscPC will once again
see off the Pentium bases PC's in my workshop
for a year or two.

I will let you all know how I get on!

Unregistered user Well i don't like KENETIC, WHY? Simple, i already have a StrongARM, I already have RISC OS 4 (4.02) so for buy KENETIC I MUST RE-BUY A StrongARM and a copy of RISC OS 4 (because RISC OS 4.02 not function with KENETIC) so i must be crazy for spend all this money only for FAST RAM! But other this there is a lot of RiscPC that don't support the new StrongARM (Made in Intel) and KENETIK use INTEL StrongARM (so i think the only users that now have not strongarm are the users that can't use it or that have not money for a StrongARM) so in all this situation thay can't use too kinetic and so why exist kenetic?????????
I love ViewFINDER because it is the real future for Risc OS GRAPHICS WAY, more to 104 Mb video tranfer, good resolutions, good colors and fast, and i don't need to replace nothing or re-buy some RiscPC components that i already have so....

Unregistered user They are actually offering a trade in system. See their web site.
Or you can probably get a little more cash secondhand.

Unregistered user The Thing I don't like about the Kinetic is the fact that you only Get £50 trade in for RO 4.02. Surely since the Value of Riscos is in the developement not the ROM chips couldn't they give almost the full cost as a discount? Also losing £100 on a 233T board is offputting, couldn't they offer a better trade-in deal (maybe more RAM or oregano). I can't justify another £300 on a processor. (However for £200 + trade in I might well think differently).

Unregistered user I have a question for all... i think that is better to build an empty motherboard with only the new fast ram and where we can plug our processors and periferials, for example a new RiscPC BOARD where we can plug all that in unpluggable from the old motherboard, yes i know that more peoples want more new features but in fact kenetic is this only a new fast ram so why don't make a board in this sence? i think that also DMA probles would be resolve in this way....

Unregistered user It isn't just extra RAM !

The RAM on the motherboard (Fast Paged Mode RAM (FPM)) is the only sort that will work with the IOMD chip. You can't simply unplug the FPRAM and replace it with SDRAM (the number of pins, electrical properties and size are different).

The kinetic board has custom chips that adapt the ARM to use faster (66MHz SDRAM) and also manage the interface to the old IOMD channel so you can simply slot the new card in.

The DMA problem is down to the fact RISC OS needs to store stuff from storage devices temporarily in the FPM still on the motherboard (rather than in the Kinetic's SDRAM). I imagine a software patch will be made available to resynchronise both FPM and SDRAM and this will be a way (albeit slow) round that particular problem.

I believe the Kinetic is a last fling at updating the old hardware for minimal cost before the release of truely innovative hardware like millipede).
