I replaced a leaky battery on a Kinetic Risc PC, but when booting it back up the CD drive no longer appears on the icon bar. I'm assuming it was saved in the battery backed storage. Can anyone advise the process for adding it again please? (I think the machine is running RISC OS Select) |

There's a chicken/egg problem (or at least was - Select might help). *configure CDROMdrives is what you want, but you can't issue it unless CDFS is available. But if no CD drives are configured, CDFS is disabled... The solution is to set a bit in CMOS using a BASIC program or similar. Somewhere I have a "SetOneCD" program for this purpose. But I think it is on a floppy for RiscPC-fixing, and not here The "easy" solution is to configure it via !Boot/!Configure. If you set a CD via !Configure, (discs section) then the CMOS bit is set automatically. You *might* be able to *rmreinit CDFS and then *configure cdromdrives maybe? Not tried. |

Google found:https://stardot.org.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?p=389417#p389417 *FX 162,138,1 Though I thought it was only needed on early versions of RISC OS 3.5 and/or 3.6. A Kinetic will be RISC OS 4.03 or later. [Edited by CJE at 12:33, 20/4/2023] |

I did the rmreinit command, then looked in settings, and found a setting for CD drives. Clicked it up to "1" and the CD drive is there now. I rebooted, and the setting was retained. Thanks for the help. |
