Yeah. And then some.No seriously, I've got so much unfinished computer projects from last year and stuff I need to start.Ditto that, except I have to finish the unfinished 2005-2009 stuff before moving on to the 2010 bits. Although, technically, I will begin the year by finishing some 2010 bits: specifically, most of my client companies have December year ends, so the first part of the year will see me bringing their 2010 accounts to a close. Another thing planned for the beginning of the year is to start car hunting. I've had too many instances of being inconvenienced by my car being off the road lately, as well as the basic fact that being a small, low, rear wheel drive sports car, it's really not the best thing to be driving in dodgy winter weather - even though it's me that's driving it. (Arrogant much?). So I'm going back to two cars, with the other being a 4x4. (No off-road driving, though). |

I wouldn't be surprised if most countries aren't in sync with the calendar year before too much longer. The UK of course will be among the last. I just got a bill from the tax office, my calculations were out and around Christmas time I should have paid an additional 19 cents outstanding. I forgot to do so, and now I have to pay 5 euros and 19 cents - 5 euros being the standard overdue payment fee. Gah, what a way to start the new year... |

When you refer to the financial year, I assume you aren't talking about the financial trading year of individual companies, which is what I was talking about. I assume you mean the tax year (or whatever other name you wish to call it), which runs from 6/4/x to 5/4/x+1 here.most of my client companies have December year ends, so the first part of the year will see me bringing their 2010 accounts to a close.Financial and calendar years are the same over here - makes it easy to remember. I wouldn't be surprised if most countries aren't in sync with the calendar year before too much longer. The UK of course will be among the last. Company financial years (here, at least!) are typically the anniversary of when the company first formed or began trading, though not always - some companies will have a first trading year that isn't 12 months, to bring them to a preferred date, and they can also be changed later. For those to all be set at the same date, be that 31st December or some other arbitrary date would not, IMO, be sensible or practical. I just got a bill from the tax office, my calculations were out and around Christmas time I should have paid an additional 19 cents outstanding. I forgot to do so, and now I have to pay 5 euros and 19 cents - 5 euros being the standard overdue payment fee. Gah, what a way to start the new year...Hmm. I've had a tax demand, as well. I submitted my tax return back in July or August (ish), and because I've been doing so much less work over the last couple of years, my tax calc for that year (tax year to 5th April 2010, covering my business year end of 30th June 2009) came out at £0.00. However, I've had a demand for an amount based on previous years. At the moment, the tax return I've already submitted will be ignored, and I have to pay them £x. Then, later, they'll calculate my tax bill based on the tax return I've already submitted and see that I've overpaid by £x, and I'll get a refund of that full amount plus interest. Now, I could contact them and avoid paying that £x, keeping it my bank account - but I'm actually better off paying it. Why? Because they pay a better rate of interest than the bank. (Or they did last time they owed me money). Hooray for the British tax system, that's what I say. |

Interest payable on overpayments of Tax potentially changes throughout the year dependant on the economic circumstances. However at the moment it is still unfortunately 0% for overpayments .. Although underpayments are charged at 2.5% |

Pfft. I see that's in "Latest", while the joke itself has been around for ages. That said, jokes quoted on bash.org are very rarely unique or original in any way, so it's hardly a surprise.Or to phrase it another way, my new year's resolution is the same as last year: 1400x1050.Shenanigans! Edit: as these much older examples from that very same site demonstrate... [Edited by filecore at 08:32, 4/1/2011] |

In the UK they won't chase for small amounts IIRC under 10 GBP they will carry it forward and charge interest on it but won't penalise you with late payment fees. I got an email from HMRC on Christmas Eve, I thought it might be a Chrsitmas Greeting... it was a reminder that my VAT retuturn was due! |

I suppose charging me an extra 5 euros is the only way they could justify the expense of sending out a letter informing me that I was overdue with my 19 cents. Ho hum. |
