Lowering the tone since the dawn of time

I can't believe I've just beaten someone that way.

In all my years of playing chess (although there's been a big 10-15 year gap - I've only just started playing again) I've never managed to use the four-move approach.

Until tonight.

I bet that was more luck than anything smile

I've done it a couple of times.

Trick is to do it to the same person wink

It was some random blokey on facebook.

I never was a particularly good chess player - and with such a long gap, I'm more than a little rusty (hell, my 7 year old nephew, who has only just learnt to play beat me last week!). So, supposedly, if the rating system for the chess app I use isn't being abused*, he should have been much better than me, and really shouldn't have lost in four moves.

But he did, so there you go.

* How to get a good rating: Know your real level and ability in terms of the rating system, and always play against players whose rating is much lower than that.

Unbelievable. They're like buses - none happen for many years, then you get two in two days! smile

Okay, now you have to play as black and win in two moves.

I was thinking about chess. Theoretically, it must be that one side can always win or force a draw, if it plays without making mistakes.

Which side is it that traditionally starts? I'm sure I've heard both... as in "Black starts", but also "White starts" from different people. Let us say that the rule is that White starts.

I thought it would be fun to write up a joke paper opaquely describing a method of playing such a game, and saying that Black (the side which plays second) can always win or force a draw.

I thought white always started.

Saying that, I am terrible at chess.

Yes, white always starts - and, yes, it's possible to force a draw (stalemate).

Am I allowed to upgrade the pieces so that they can carry explosives into the game? If so, pawn forward, bishop all the way across, and BOOM!.

Edit: "I'm I allowed" ??? "AM I ALLOWED!" DOH!

Hmm. Are you saying that there is a known movement algorithm which guarantees that you won't lose, from the start? I didn't know that. (In fact, I think you're not, and you've missed my point.) Does it work for one side only, or both?
