I've got the software renderer version running again :)

There's a pretty decent speed up over previous versions (thanks again to softfloat in gcc).

Next steps are to work on the reliability, sound and mouse support. I could also do with getting the build system hosted in source control somewhere that other people can benefit.

I'm also still waiting for the offer of a replacement icon that looks a bit better :)

Have fun

(ps, you'll require elfloader for this version)

Hi Adam, you should probably still do your homework, at least until you make it to uni. Then you can safely slack off. ;)

Still working on the DMA version. Took me a day just to reacquaint myself with the code. BTW, it's a *lot* easier to work on drivers when you have two graphics cards, since messing something up doesn't mean you have to reboot!
heh.

Where can you get the demo files to test this out?

They are supplied on the latest issue of RISCWorld but if you're not a subscriber, you can get them from here: http://www.idsoftware.com/business/techdownloads/ :)

Thanks but don't I need a PC to extract the game files or something? This is an .exe file.

Also the demo. requires a directory called "Sources" on the root of the hard disc. And I don't know if it still Iyonix only in any case.

It's a version of Quake2 using the software renderer built with GCC 4.x and using the software floating point library. It's the first version of Quake 2 for the Iyonix that runs at an approaching playable speed. I've just realised that it currently contains the wrong version of the GameUtils module so won't run as packaged. You can get the right version of the module from the most recently released IyonixMesa version.

I'm hoping to get back to working on it again soon but need to resurrect the virtual machine that I've been building it inside. Unfortunately Vista and VMWare Server don't seem too happy with each other so I'll have to find some sort of alternative solution for a build environment.

PS. It's built to target the xscale processor but you may find that it works on other platforms too (no guarantees tho :))

I've (finally) had a quick go at the new software version, and it is indeed very nice :)

The old version only got 13fps when doing a timerefresh at the start of the first demo level - this one gets 23.5.

Andrew: see this post for details of how to get the game running.

I haven't tried it (and can't remember whether I've left the networking code commented out) :) It is, however, probably too flakey at the moment to be worth bothering.

That's completely different to what I see :o I think FTPc has problems accepting URLs. Just open a connection to ftp.idsoftware.com, navigate to idstuff/quake2/, and download q2-314-demo-x86.exe

Which I'm doing now. Surely downloading should be faster than 16.8K/sec? :(

Well, find a mirror of it on a gaming site somewhere :P Or, I could upload the files in a plain .zip to AA/TIB. Which I guess I will do.

Don't be fooled by my claims of 23fps though - most of the time it will probably be somewhere between 5 and 10. Which makes combat almost impossible since mouse input isn't working yet :(

Thanks that's working, not sure why it didn't before.
AA needs a hefty update: Quake2, Karma. I think Drobe has shut down!

Ah yes, you need elfloader as well.

http://ww.ecs.soton.ac.uk/~jmb202/riscos/elfloader.zip

Run the module in there and it should work.

I find a lot of stuff need the ElfLoader. . .Espesially when VRPC crashes for the second time.

And for the rest of you I'll also provide a fully compiled version. Note it requires a Geforce2MX graphics card and RISC OS 5.10/11 and that it's currently pretty slow and will crash when switching from one map to another (and of course you'll require the commercial Quake2 data files to go with it).
Here's a prebuilt version of GLQuake2.

Caveats:
Crashes a fair bit
Needs RISC OS 5.10/5.11 + Geforce2 MX
Needs commercial (or apparently demo) Quake 2 files
Pretty slow
No sound
Leaves lots of dynamic areas behind after quit/crash
Doesn't have a very nice icon (replacement submissions welcomed smile)
Probably lots of other things
Oh, and no documentation what-so-ever

Have fun

PS. I appear to have broken the software renderer at the moment so it'll be a while before a version that's compatible with other systems is released.

I just got IyonixMesa built with gcc 4.1.1 prerelease 1 and it runs *much* quicker than when built with 3.4.6 release 3.

With some initial speed measurements of my earth demo, rendering is about twice as fast. smile
