Dear Microsoft,

What's the point of having a multimedia keyboard if the media player program still needs to have input focus for the buttons to work?

Dear Mr Jobs,

Why, when copying a directory over a directory with the same name, does MacOS X irreversably delete the contents of the original directory before replacing it with the new, instead of merging the directories?

Regards,

Poolie.

Tut. Didn't I already tell you you should be reading Daring Fireball? That includes the archives!

I think the answer is that they're aiming for intuitivity, rather than functionality.

Sounds like you dont have the correct keyboard drivers loaded - my multimedia keyboard controls whatever multimedia app I have loaded(VLC, iTunes, WinAmp etc) even if it doesnt have the input focus.

Cheers,

Neil

So if you load all three, then press Play, do all three start playing?

In that case....

Dear Microsoft,

Why do the multimedia keys on a multimedia keyboard (sometimes) work even if windows thinks the keyboard is a standard one?

Intuitive like, how you have to drag the icon for a USB mass storage device TO THE TRASH CAN in order to dismount it? (According to the instructions for my pen drive, at least).

Old hat. You can do that if you want, or you can right-click and choose Eject, or you can click the eject button next to it in a Finder window.

Anyway, when you drag it to the trash, the trash icon changes into an eject symbol.

That's so intuitive, it made me try a real life equivalent. I finished watching a DVD and I wanted to eject it, so I threw the remote in the bin.

It didn't work, though. :|

I've got a middle one, too :P

Although I haven't configured it to do anything

I said, "aiming for". ;)

And, as Monkeyson pointed out, that's a bit of strawman. You don't drag it to the trash can. You drag it to the eject icon.

My girlfriend's "mighty" mouse doesn't. It has no buttons; you just press down on it and it tells via magic if you wanted to left-click or right-click. (Or doesn't, more often.)

A triumph of industrial design.

Also, it has (almost) no way of holding down the button if you want to pick the mouse up, so it's basically impossible to drag anything anywhere. (Like, for example, the USB icon to the trash can.) :(

Handy hint of the day: Don't try using visual studio to find out that there are 76,000 occurences of a search term in a 14MB file. grep -c is much faster.

Dear Microsoft,

Why do popups interupt fullscreen games?

I play games like World of Warcraft, now and I notice it interupts my game.

Also, I play Frets on Fire (Guitar Hero Clone) and the popups stop that while I'm playing, unhappy

And why, when scandisk does work, does it fail to find problems that chkdsk then finds at boot?

Surely that's just the sign of a badly configured installation. Or something nasty that's running. I've never had popups in my games under windows... Windows' messages all appear behind the game thus not interrupting.

Popups interrupt games for me as well. Just not in World of Warcraft, because I don't play that tongue
