A while back I saw this thread
http://www.iconbar.com/forums/viewthread.php?threadid=7182
...and Bug Hunter in Space got a few mentions, so it inspired me to get in touch with some of the folks who used to be Minerva software and they have agreed that Bug Hunter in Space can be Freeware from now on.

So here it is, the disc image of Bug Hunter in Space, free to download:
http://www.koanotic.org/arc/bhis.zip

It runs OK for me under the Archie emulator v0.9 with RISC-OS 3, apart from that I havent tested it on any other RISC-OS platforms.

If anyone wants to stick it in the Acorn Arcade download section or somewhere like that, that would be great.

(If you want to verify its freeware status, email me and I will send you more details)

Enjoy!

Fantastic stuff! I remember playing that for aaages on my old Arc - it's an absolutely genius game, and a complete surprise after the relative simplicity of the original Bug Hunter.

Have to say some of the later levels are completely evil though! Never did finish it. If this can be acornarcadeified and SA compatibilised, I'll have to give it another go.

Just extracted it from the disc image and tested it. Runs happily on Strong ARM with RISC OS 3.70 and ABCLib 4.15. I just tweaked the '!Run' file a bit to stop it from loading its old versions of ABClib and FPE.

The only minor quirk I noticed was a slightly disordered system beep after quitting the game.

What do peeps use to extract disc images?

dd to fd0 on my linux box gave me trouble when i inserted the disk back into my RPC. could be my acorn kit's broken, could be i did something wrong....

What do peeps use to extract disc images?

Don't know, I've done it the 'hard way' ;) :
Fired up the Archimedes emulator, copied the game on the emulator's hard disc, packed it with !SparkFS, copied the archive back on a DOS 'disc' and saved that disc image (a regular DOS image) back on the real computer.

There has to be an easier way, but I just haven't found one.

Cool. If someone can email me a zip of an extracted/modified StrongARM version then I will host that too.

OK, for those of you with those newfangled modern RISC-OS/StrongArm machines, here's the extracted version (ie not a disc image) of BHIS:

http://www.koanotic.org/arc/bhis_extracted.zip

Holger Palmroth has kindly extracted and tweaked this - notes are in the zip file.

Apparently it "Runs happily on Strong ARM with RISC OS 3.70 and ABCLib 4.15" and probably other RISC-OS platforms too, but I'm not able to test it myself. If people can confirm other platforms it works on, that would be very useful.

Cheers

Also works on RISC OS 4.
Now what about Thundermonk and Freddy's Folly if memory serves :)

I always get stuck around there too... in fact, is there a tool for Risc OS 3 that allows you to save the state of a game (so I can save my Bug Hunter II game next time I play?!)

In fact, didn't The Hacker/Desktop Hacker do this?

... and here's a disc image of the original 'Bug Hunter', which is also freeware now:
http://www.koanotic.org/arc/bug1.zip

Its technically a lot simpler than the sequel (when I was 14, I hadn't figured out arm-assembler scrolling yet), but has more levels (32), and some of them I just can't remember how to do anymore : )

It runs OK for me under the Archie emulator v0.9 with RISC-OS 3 - I don't know about other platforms. If someone gets round to extracting it and StrongArm-ing it then email me a copy (info@koanotic.org) and I'll host that as well.

Enjoy!

yeah, bug hunter was released about 9 months or a year before bug hunter in space, sometime around 1989, 1990. I can't remember exactly ...

yes it was released commercially.

to answer the other question: I think both games were sold for about £8 or £9.
Overall the combined sales over the first few years were of the order of about 1000. A small market in those days for archimedes games!

I still have a scrapbook somewhere with the reviews from acorn user etc : )
