I've been playing with some custom t-shirt designs recently - I consider myself fairly reasonable with Photoshop-type apps, and can turn out a nice design. I tested an online DIY store, SpreadShirt, just with their basic cheapest t-shirt. My custom t-shirts arrived this morning, and I must say, they seem to be decent quality, the prints seemed quite good, and the t-shirts were nice to wear. You can print on the front, the back, and each arm (although the more you add of course increases the cost). However, given that they seem to be decent enough value for money considering that they're reasonably high quality custom prints (working out about £17 for a front print, plus a little postage), I was wondering if there was any interest in designing some sort of 'retro' Acorn or RISC OS themed shirt design? Perhaps a weathered Acorn logo, or a remake of the black Clan shirt. I would be happy to take suggestions and to make designs in .png which you could use to make your own at the print-your-own store of your choice. |

Pro tip: make sure the fonts are correct! There's a tendency to use Times on the Acorn logo - which is incorrect, as the correct font is Bodoni. Whenever possible use vector file formats rather than bitmaps. |

There's a DrawFile format version around somewhere. Not sure if I still have a copy. If your designs aren't prepared using RISC OS, the SVG version may be some use. Does that version look like the Bodoni one? |

It's the same logo as printed on the front of the Phoebe case. There's also an ArtWorks format image of this version of the Acorn logo on one of the Risc Risc CDs. |

I have copies of most logos with perfect fonts and vector graphics. So far I have the A3000 logo, the Archimedes logo, the Archimedes switcher, the old, middle and newest Acorn logos, the ART logo, the RPC logo, the Acorn R140 logo, the Electron logo and the BBC Micro logo. Here's a sample design I just hacked together with the Electron logo, imagine how it'd look on the back of a black t-shirt... EDIT: what I really need are ideas for what to do with these logos, how to style them, etc. Way-out montages? Worn, distressed versions of the logos? Or simple prints, like the BBC owl? Ideas please! EDIT 2: changed the JPG preview for a PNG version which looks like it will print nicely on a t-shirt, transparency between the grid lines etc. [Edited by filecore at 08:30, 11/10/2011] |

Had a T-shirt done myself last year. Nothing fancy though, copy shop quality but I quite like it. Used a BBC micro image, photoshopped that until it resembled a technical drawing. No logo whatsoever, plain b/w. Not sure if the RPC would be as iconic and as recognizable. |

EDIT: what I really need are ideas for what to do with these logos, how to style them, etc. Way-out montages? Worn, distressed versions of the logos? Or simple prints, like the BBC owl? Ideas please!OK then, here's an idea. Get the biggest Acorn nut to just fit within the printable area. Take a picture of the RISCPC/RiscPC/RISC PC (delete as appropriate) motherboard, and crop to an interesting area with lots of circuit tracks - ideally including the ARM chip. Now trace the image and recolour, with the circuit traces and chips ending up bright green. Everything else should be transparent. (If you have the ARM chip, you may want to copy the text outline if it's legible, or fudge it to say ARM or whatever.) Now mask off the (appropriately scaled) circuit image with the acorn. Add the acorn outline back in, in green. Image suitable for black or white T-shirts is my guess. If it looks as good as it does in my imagination, I'd buy one. |

Hmm, looks kinda familiarYeah, nicked the original photo from somewhere and used that (Wikipedia ISTR?) not that I'd feel terribly guilty about it though. How about something from the GUI? Task Menu, Filer msg, folder structure (!name, !Run, !RunImage in ugly sys font), the Iconbar? A hand using a three buttoned mouse like from the welcome guide, slightly more stylized though. An old ad/photo/mag cover showing Phoebe/Omega/Quercus "coming soon" A cover tape! |

I used a StrongARM chip for the circuits. The photo I found didn't fit perfectly, which is why the socket is visible down the left, but it can be tweaked... assuming I'm vaguely on target with this. |

And here's a different (maybe slightly better?) one, using the actual RPC motherboard instead. You can see two Pace 4.02 ROMs as well as the acorn-within-an-acorn joke of the Acorn logo at the top of the motherboard. |

Looks good. How about a spot of red for the LED(s)? There's also the Raspberry Pi, if you fancy a bit of futurology! (From reading the comments there, the final logo may be tweaked further.) [Edited by trevj at 09:28, 10/10/2011] |

I also traced the Acorn System 1 board, did it in white-on-black (classy old-fashioned blueprints style) as well as techy green-on-black. Here's an example. Could make something cool from this, I'm sure, or even just use it as it is. (EDIT: see the green version here) [Edited by filecore at 09:50, 10/10/2011] |

The Aaarghimedes has a certain Pythonesque charm I do like the nut-pcb idea but they seem to suffer from the same problem tube maps had in the pre-Harry Beck days: there's just too much detail. |

Snapper's quite good but you might get lost among pacman, frogger and space invader themed shirts. There's also an Elite shirt. For the Beep the system prompt, white on black seems hard to beat. |

I do like the nut-pcb idea but they seem to suffer from the same problem tube maps had in the pre-Harry Beck days: there's just too much detail. It's easy to simplify it somewhat, if you prefer (wash out all the fine lines, just leaving most of the major details)? Basically I take a photograph of the PCB, then trace the lines. Then I remove the background and colour the lines, and bulk them out a little so they're easier to see. I can manipulate them in other ways, though. [Edited by filecore at 10:57, 10/10/2011] |

Rather than the dark green background that I have behind my circuits. That's possible too, and I suppose would look pretty cool on black. |

How about using some of the technical drawings: http://acorn.chriswhy.co.uk/docs/Acorn/Manuals/Manuals.html#TRM Perhaps a more steampunkish version? |

All of this would involve more than a little artistic licence regarding the player's ability, no. of lives and score! |

How about using some of the technical drawings:I might try something steampunkish later, but the TRMs got me thinking of text. What's more nerdy than text? Matrix text! Here, I used the text of the RO3 User Guide as the background: |

Yes. I was imagining much more precise traces.I do like the nut-pcb idea but they seem to suffer from the same problem tube maps had in the pre-Harry Beck days: there's just too much detail. It's easy to simplify it somewhat, if you prefer (wash out all the fine lines, just leaving most of the major details)? I can manipulate them in other ways, though. Like in this : http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/thumblarge_184/11895022753RGH28.jpg (only if it's from a photo it'll have components on, I guess.) Hmm, I wonder if he meant just plain circuit traces in an acorn-shaped outline? Rather than the dark green background that I have behind my circuits. That's possible too, and I suppose would look pretty cool on black.Yes. more contrast=better. |
