Stuck in the Styx [updated]

It's been a while since we released our last Tom Cooper game, what with the server outages and stuff, so I thought today would be a good day to get another one out the door. Although we have yet to resolve the issue of our ex-commercial downloads, there's nothing stopping us from releasing freeware games - especially gems such as Styx.

If you've ever played Peter Naulls' port of icebreaker, or numerous other games in the same vein, then you'll know what to expect. You must fill in areas of the landscape by drawing lines between the walls, all the while avoiding the local nasties who are out to get you. In Styx these take the form of pretty yet deadly sparkly things, and not so pretty but equally deadly yellow blobs. Since this game is from the early 90's, there's some obligatory scroll text and Tracker music to help spice up the action. Don't let this put you off though, as the game also uses textured backgrounds to good effect. Each section of the screen that gets filled in will be replaced with the appropriate part of the background image for the next level, although once you get to the higher levels you'll be too busy trying to stay alive to find the time to look at them.

This version of Styx is the same as available elsewhere, except that it's had numerous bugs fixed to enable it to work on StrongARM's RISC OS 4/Select machines. It should also run happily on Aemulor Pro, or under an emulator such as VirtualAcorn.

Update:

It looks like the current version of Styx doesn't work under Aemulor Pro after all. Expect a fixed version as soon as possible.

Unregistered user So does this version still have the dodgy background texture on a later level? The one with the giant phone? :)

Unregistered user Yes, it does. Luckily though you can just replace the sprite with another if you're worried about it being kiddy-safe.
